Solar Eclipse from our Rooftop2 Aug. 2027

On 2 August 2027, Tunisia will experience a spectacular total solar eclipse. Millions of people will travel, to stare at our sky. Meanwhile, the Medina of Tunis has been sitting here for over 1,300 years, patiently waiting for people to notice that it's spectacular.

For 5 minutes and 41 seconds, the Moon will cover the Sun, daylight will disappear, temperatures will drop, birds will become confused, and we will remember that we're tiny creatures, living on a rock, flying through space. Then, just as suddenly, it will all be over. The Medina, however, will still be here. It has survived empires, dynasties, merchants, pirates, famines, plagues, wars, revolution, urban planners, and tourists.

At Dar Ben Gacem, we don't have giant screens, we don't have laser shows, we do have a traditional rooftop overlooking one of the oldest cities in the Mediterranean. As the sky darkens over centuries-old domes, minarets, courtyards and rooftops, you'll experience something no observatory can recreate; a city that has been quietly watching the universe for over a millennium.

And yes, we'll serve a Tunisian lunch. Because even cosmic events shouldn't interrupt good food. Let's be honest… Flying to Tunisia, for an experience less than 6 minutes, might be dramatic. So, plan to design your five-day experience, that gives you plenty to do, before the Moon steals the spotlight.

You'll discover hidden streets with local guides not on Google Maps. You can cook Tunisian dishes, that taste better when prepared at our Dar (older than some countries). You'll practice Arabic calligraphy, a reminder that not everything worth creating comes from a touchscreen. You'll meet artisans who have been preserving traditional crafts, long before "handmade" became a marketing strategy. By the time the eclipse arrives, you'll already have dozens of stories to tell. The solar eclipse, will be the grand finale.

According to astronomers, 2027 solar eclipse, is one of the longest visible from land in the 21st century. All our heads will be up, cameras will click, social media will become educational, then everyone will look around, and discover that the Medina has been offering unforgettable experiences continuously since the 8th century. No reservations required back then; but reservations are a very good idea now!
